Greetings all,

On this day, December 3rd in 311 AD, the Emperor Diocletian died:

Diocletian established the tetrarchy and divided the Roman Empire into the Eastern and Western Empires, along with his appointed co-Emperor Maximian.

This division would remain for the rest of Roman history and some scholars regard his actions as the start of the Byzantine Empire.

Diocletian ruled for 21 years and retired peacefully, which in itself was a major achievement after the crisis of the 3rd Century.

 Greetings all,

On this day, December 2nd in 537 AD, Pope Silverius died:

You'd think that a pope in Rome would be off topic here, but not this one. He was accused of conspiring with the Goths by Antonia, the wife of General Belisarius, and Belisarius exiled him to the island of Palmarola where he died. He was replaced by Pope Vigilius appointed from Constantinople, who was the first pope of the Byzantine Papacy.

Greetings all,

Due to low water levels from drought, structures of the ancient Greek city of Scepsis have been uncovered:

Most prominent are tombs and a bath house belonging to the Byzantine period of the city. Scepsis was flooded by the building of the Bayramic Dam in Turkey.

Scepsis may well be the origin of the word "Skeptic" as the city had long associations with ancient philosophy. Archaeological work has begun there while the water levels are low.
