Greetings all,

In the news - new archaeology at the site of Khirbet Midras in Israel:

The ancient name of this site is lost but the area contains everything from Pyramids to a Basilica. You don't see those together every day!

Greetings all,

Due to low water levels from drought, structures of the ancient Greek city of Scepsis have been uncovered:

Most prominent are tombs and a bath house belonging to the Byzantine period of the city. Scepsis was flooded by the building of the Bayramic Dam in Turkey.

Scepsis may well be the origin of the word "Skeptic" as the city had long associations with ancient philosophy. Archaeological work has begun there while the water levels are low.

Greetings all,

On this day we commemorate with joy the birth of Emperor Manuel I Komnenos, on November 28th in 1118 AD:

His reign was the last flowering of the Komnenian restoration. Manuel I was the last Byzantine ruler to attempt regaining territories in the West and in Egypt.

There should be cake!  :)

Greetings all,

On this Day we commemorate with sadness the passing of the Empress Gallia Placidia on November 27th in 450 AD:

Gallia Placidia was the daughter of Emperor Theodosius I, Regent for Valentinian III, Queen Consort to Ataulf, king of the Visigoths, and briefly Empress Consort to Emperor Constantius III. She was also a younger paternal half-sister to the Emperors Arcadius and Honorious.
